This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 8th grade English Language Arts students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language. You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.
This group is captivated by videos and technology, but many of them don't have the means—due to financial hardships—to use computers beyond our school walls.
My Project
My students perk right up when I show a YouTube video or show any kind of visual media. They are digital natives, and old-fashioned lectures tend to leave them cold. Put the power of tech into to their hands, however, and they turn up the heat and go to town! They have a lot of experience with Google Slides and Docs, but having video editing capabilities would really fire them up!
After reading Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," my students will create their own graphic novel called the The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time (fill-in-the-blank).
Each student gets to tell a version of his or her own life story. The novel is about how other people's impressions of us are often inaccurate, based upon looks and stereotypes rather than our social-emotional inner selves. This project allows students to juxtapose their outward forms with who they really are on the inside, using photography, drawings, poems, diary entries, songs, and videos. Using this laptop, all these media could be combined into a digital media story-telling experience. This project lifts the veil that hides students' inner selves, leading to a deeper understanding as well as to greater acceptance and understanding of each other. In this age of terrible violence and misunderstanding, this project can help make my students keenly aware of the underlying humanity in all of us.
