Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
It's now 2005 and my classroom needs some updating! A digital camera to help capture the significant moments in the lives of my students would help show them the importance and value of technology in their world.
Teaching first grade in a Title I school, I have the pleasure of celebrating the accomplishments of learning on a daily basis. I encourage 20 native Spanish speakers to grab a hold of the English language as they develop into fluent readers, and there is no one method for doing this. First graders thrive when their learning is meaningful to their six-year-old world and gets them so excited that they don't even know they're learning. Because we do art projects, group work, dramatic play, music performances, and many activities that get us up and moving, a digital camera would help me capture these moments for them right away. They've enjoyed the pictures I've taken of them, but are eager to see them immediately rather than wait for the delay of film processing. With a digital camera, not only can they see immediate feedback of their learning, they can also view the latest miracles of technology right in front of their eyes. What better way to get them excited about learning and becoming integral, valuable members of our society as they grow older?
For students who live in poverty and see little happiness in their surroundings outside of school, I take a huge responsibility in making sure I do as much as I can to build in them a love for themselves, their heritage, and their future. Please help me bring my classroom into the 21st century and bring my students a view of the endless possibilities that await them!
