New Voices Middle School in Brooklyn is an eight-year old middle school which focuses on integrating arts education into the academic curriculum. Our philosophy is that every child has a gift, and that, through the arts, he or she is able to express that gift and excel, building students' confidence and abilities. In the Computer Graphic Arts elective, students build computer skills and learn to express themselves visually using a variety of programs, including Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator. Every one of the approximately 150 sixth graders in the school participates in the computer program, and then approximately thirty-four seventh and eighth graders choose the graphics lab as their arts elective. The upper level students attend the graphics lab on an intensive basis, four-and-a-half hours each week, developing in-depth understanding of computer graphics applications. New computer equipment, scheduled to be installed in February 2006, will enhance the students' learning experiences even further. Our request is for funds to purchase digital cameras for the lab. At present, we use images obtained from the internet or clipart included in the software programs to complete projects such as brochures, poster designs and CD cover designs. A digital camera would enhance students' creative experiences and ability to express themselves artistically. This proposal is for one of three cameras. Specifically, we seek to purchase a Canon PowerShot A610 or Sony DSC-W5. Thank you.
