My Middle School Students love technology and the opportunities they have at school to use computers, cameras, and the internet! My 5th-8th-grade students come from one of the poorest neighborhoods in Peoria. Their parents are struggling to get food on the table and just survive. There are days when some of my students don't have heat or water let alone internet access at home. Since they don't have what they need at home, they count on school to be the place where they not only learn, but also where they can get access to the modern technologies and conveniences they don't have at home.
Most of my students don't have access to a computer or internet at home.
That's kind of hard for most of us to imagine, since, according to 2016 census data, almost 90% of Americans have a computer in their home. Most of my students can only dream of having a computer at home to type an assignment or research their science project. Consequently, students are hungry to get time on the computers and they jump at any chance they can get to work in the lab.
With this all-in-one printer & scanner, my graphics design students will be able to scan hand-drawn items so they can digitally manipulate them with the computer. When their designs are complete they will then be able to see a full-color proof of their artwork printed in class. Many students struggle with only seeing a design on-screen. It just isn't the same as seeing it printed on paper.
Students are better able to visualize multi-panel brochures and print pieces when they can print it out, fold it and hold it in their hands.
Adding the scanner, allows students to take their designs to the next level. It allows students to draw on traditional media and then scan their hand-drawn items to use in their digital designs.
I chose an All-in-One HP Laser Printer because it is a high quality, yet the economical option to both scan and print student work.
