My Project
About 25 years ago, a young kindergarten student who was just learning the English language was partaking in a class birthday party. Every child was given a standard spork package that came with the multi-folded square napkin. The child didn't have many friends and lacked the language skills to converse with his classmates. However, he was skilled with his hands. He took the napkin and carefully tore two circles roughly 2 inches apart and a larger oval below it. He made a ghost mask out of napkin and wanted to show his classmates at his table. The other children laughed and elicited the response he was hoping for. His teacher, Mrs. Johnson called his name, "Andy."
I was so worried that I had disrupted the class and angered my teacher that I quickly crumbled up the napkin mask in shame and tried to hide it.
Scared and unaware of what may happen next, I was shocked to see a smile on my teacher's face. She beckoned me to the front and asked me to show the rest of my class what I had created. She praised me for my creativity. Although I lacked the language to understand what my teacher was saying, I felt proud of my work.
I see a lot of my students in that kindergarten reflection of myself. I want them to feel comfortable and confident in their work. I want them to feel proud of the wonderful things their imagination can conjure up and create with the materials in school. I am requesting a giant digital frame TV to display the work of my students for everyone to see. To display a child's work for their peers and parents to see shows a lot of appreciation for their hard work and builds their confidence.
