My Students

I am a Special Education teacher who works with students with disabilities from grades 1 through 5. My students are children with high needs and are at risk of falling behind grade-level standards, pandemic or not.

Remote teaching and learning have been difficult for all, but my student population has been hit hardest compared to their general education peers.

My students love learning. Even during these difficult times, I am constantly amazed by how much grit these youngsters show me every day when they log onto my lessons. They attend every lesson with a smile and tell me "it's okay" when I am experiencing technical difficulties. Many of my students have an attention span that lasts under 10 or 15 minutes but they are also my most punctual students who want to log on to see their friends and teacher every day. They work extremely hard to follow through virtually and I need help providing that smooth experience for them.

My Project

Remote learning has been a struggle especially when I do not have the technology to support it. My small group lessons require me to give explicit targeted instruction to my students in the most effective manner. When schools closed last year, my instruction turned upside down and like many educators, I heavily relied on an old computer in order to reach my students. I struggled with falling towers of books that tried to hold my computer so that I can find the best lighting for instruction. I filmed in the wee hours of the night to ensure that my videos were free of daytime background noise that I had no control over. Even with my best efforts, my students had difficulty hearing me, seeing my exemplars, and were challenged to follow the slow programs and apps that I used.

With a new laptop and display port, I will be able to navigate and deliver my lessons efficiently and effectively.

I will be able to lesson plan and create content that is clear, concise, and user friendly. I will finally be able to use the educational applications with an Apple device that my students already know so well. The display port will help me connect with a document camera so that I can model my handwritten work for my students.

Last March, I did not have the appropriate technology to support my virtual instruction. This year, I need help getting that technology ready for the start of this school year. My students cannot miss out on any more instruction due to the lack of resources. I need a laptop to run the programs that they need. They need to be able to see and hear clearly what I present to ensure the best virtual learning possible.
