This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am fortunate to teach the most amazing group of 5th graders at Madrid Neighborhood School. They have been working very hard to develop as strong readers and writers this year, and they have made great progress towards their reading fluency goals. However, getting them excited about reading has been a challenge.

Many of my students have never read a full novel from start to finish.

They have read excerpts in class but have never reached the milestone of finishing a full chapter book. I am hoping to finish off this year with a novel study, so that every single student will confidently go into summer break knowing that they can read challenging books.

I'm asking for donations to pay for copies of the book Holes. I selected this text because it is mysterious and exciting, and I think my students will deeply connect to its themes and characters. My hope is to get enough copies that students can have their own to take home throughout the unit, so that they are not limited by what we read in class. Thank you for considering my project!
