My Project

As a Pre-K teacher, my job is to prepare students for the increasingly demanding work they will encounter in kindergarten and beyond. However, at this age, students benefit most by learning through play, learning "1,2,3" and "A,B,C" by engaging in hands-on, fun activities.

A sensory table is a wonderful tool for making learning inviting and enjoyable for students, and is a staple in many Pre-K classrooms.

I recently moved to the top-rated school in our parish (county, for non-Louisianians) and I was surprised to find that my new classroom did not have a sensory table! Though marketed as a "sand and water table," these tables can be used with a large variety of materials to keep students engaged and learning during center time. A sensory table is a great way for children to independently explore materials, problem-solve, develop creativity, and practice conversational skills as they engage in play with classmates.

With a sensory table in our classroom, students will be able to engage their senses and gain important skills and knowledge, all while "playing" at the table. Materials can be changed out seasonally and by theme---students can dig for fossils in the sand during a dinosaur unit, "fish" for magnetic letters during an ocean theme, or explore measurement and volume by scooping colored rice into multiple different-sized containers. The possibilities are endless and the learning never stops with a sensory table in the Pre-K classroom!
