Can you imagine teaching 2 grade levels, implementing new Common Core curriculum, and differentiating the curriculum - all happening effectively in a class of 30 little 5 and 6 year olds? I believe it can be done with a little forethought and a whole lot of organization!
My kindergarten/first grade combination class is already halfway identified.
So far, the students in my class come from varying degrees of academic and social-behavioral needs, second language skills, and multicultural backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school, which means a large portion of our student population qualify for free or reduced rate lunch.
My Project
Due to the wide spectrum of needs and skills at our school, it is even more imperative to differentiate the curriculum for our students. Since literacy skills in reading and writing are the first and foremost standards we will focus on in our class, the organizational materials (a movable organizer cart, reading tubs, etc.) will help streamline the accessibility of student literacy materials for their small learning groups. In order to teach each child at their instructional level, small group instruction will be used in all areas of the curriculum. Students will be able to utilize the color coded tubs and organizational materials on a daily basis to find their individualized learning tools and books at their instructional level. The requested resources would ensure children do not lose any instructional time searching for their materials as they will be clearly organized and labeled for easy and efficient access.
An organized and easy to maneuver classroom is essential for all children, but especially for children who come from chaotic home situations.
With the gift of the requested materials, I can continue to strive to create a differentiated, inviting environment for my students to come, learn, and thrive!
