Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come excited to learn in two languages as part of our Spanish immersion program, which was adopted more than 14 years ago to meet the needs of the cultural and linguistic diversity in our district. Ten years ago, parents got organized and successfully implemented uniforms at our school. This has helped our students to stay focused on learning, and it has provided a positive learning environment for everyone.

I am enriched and blessed by my students' diverse cultural, linguistic, and economic backgrounds.

More than 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

All of my kindergarten students get an amazing and unique opportunity to start learning English and Spanish from kindergarten to grade 12. Twenty-five percent of my students' first language is English, 50% of my students' first language is Spanish, and 25% are multilingual, they speak another language at home. Most are bilingual. They share the journey to be able to graduate from high school bi-cultural, bilingual, and bi-literate; it all begins in my kindergarten classroom.

My Project

At the beginning of the year, we had a set of iPads to share between four kindergarten classroom. However, my class went virtual in January for a week and many other students had to quarantine. Those iPads went home with those students and they are keeping them home in case we need to go virtually again. Every day, in person learning or virtually, is a new opportunity to provide my students just the right the tools and support to meet their unique needs. Each student brings his or her own strengths and I want to support my students the best they can.

By having two more iPads in the classroom, I can better differentiate instruction during their independent learning time.

Right now, we rotate the iPads donated through DonorsChoose. They love the day they get to use them, and I know I can provide them with books that interests them and they enjoy many of our districts adaptive digital applications like SeeSaw, iReady, Handwriting Without Tears, to RazKids. Each application is another opportunity to reinforce many of the foundational skills we have been learning in reading, math, handwritting and Spanish, but at their own level and interest. For instance, RazKids offers an option for me to assign digital books for students to ready in Spanish, English and even Vietnamese. It also have the option for student to select digital books to listen, read and test their comprehension on books that they want to read. These two iPads will make a huge difference in my classroom, more students will be able to use these applications more than twice a week and it will allow me to support more students in my classroom.
