My Students

My students are 9th and 10th graders who are attending a large, urban high school that services grades 7-12. They have a very rigorous day at our school, moving from class to class. Our school is the most diverse school in the city and often listed as the most diverse school in our state. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, spiritual beliefs, races, previous school experiences, and even socioeconomic backgrounds. Our students seek admission to our public school through an exam, and come from all over the city in order to attend. Each year, we have more and more students with disabilities, particularly autism. We have a very large population for whom English is not their first language.

Our students are bright, committed, urban students who would benefit tremendously from better access to technology--especially since many do not even have internet access at home.

My Project

Creating multimedia is an essential skill that should be part of every English classroom. Graphic tablets, because of their stylus-based interface and ability to detect some or all of pressure, tilt, and other attributes of the stylus and its interaction with the tablet, are widely considered to offer a very natural way to create computer graphics, especially two-dimensional computer graphics. This will help my students tremendously.

This inexpensive drawing tablet will make a huge difference for my students to adapt their writing into a multimedia format such as a graphic novel.

Our school is planning an interdisciplinary "Comic Con" in the Spring. My students, who have been studying memoir writing, will create their own "Comic" or graphic novel of an event from their own lives. We will display these at the "Comic Con."

This type of differentiated instruction is particularly helpful for providing the 21st century skills my students will need as they enter the workforce. Communicating through multimedia is a skill they will need more and more. I hope these tablets will provide an important start to developing those skills.
