Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are a school of about 350 students from transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade. 48% of our students are English Language Learners and our school qualifies for 100% free lunch.
My 3rd graders are hard-working, energetic, and love challenges.
They want to learn about everything and are gaining the knowledge to do so independently.
To help them learn as much as they possibly can, I provide instruction at grade level as well as at instructional level. My students enjoy learning and practicing on Chromebooks, but they also thrive when learning and practicing with materials they can use in their hands.
My Project
With the multitude of resources available to help students learn at their own levels, it is important to have materials that can be reused and still be kept in excellent condition.
Learning materials also need to be organized easily so students can find the appropriate materials independently, practice at their level, and return the materials ready and in good condition for the next student who will use them.
Laminating pouches keep materials sturdy. I will laminate materials for small groups to use. We will use these in math center practice, for phonics and grammar practice, for reading skills and comprehension practice, and also enrichment activities in these areas when students have finished assignments.
The binder rings help keep all of these center pieces together and organized. Students can undo the rings to work on the materials and when finished, put all of the pieces back correctly and close up the rings.
We will use the bins to store our reading books when we aren’t reading a set in small groups. We have hundreds of books in our new reading series.
The magnetic whiteboards will be used in small group instruction for math and literacy. We use whiteboards daily in our small groups as I teach the students strategies, but the boards have seen better days. Magnetic boards will allow us to use magnetic tiles to build words and we have magnetic math manipulative as well. Having these whiteboards will allow students to use them in groups with me and concurrently have a small set for students to use independently.
These supplies will help our class have a variety of learning materials for all levels of learners, keep materials organized, and move students on their way to becoming independent learners.
