The students in the classroom range from ages 3 to 5 years. There are a mix of developmental abilities, as this is an inclusive classroom. An inclusive classroom means that their are typically developing students as well as students with special needs. The students are all in one classroom together, growing and learning from one another.
While some of the special needs students may be functioning in the 9 to 12 months range developmentally, we also have students who are functioning age appropriately.
There is a great opportunity for students to see age appropriate behaviors and learn from peer role models. We love watching our students learn and share with one another.
My Project
Our school was flooded during Hurricane Harvey and we lost some of our chairs that were used with many of the students with special needs. We are currently having school in a local church, as we are not able to teach in our school or traditional classrooms. I have started this project in hopes to get some chairs back to benefit the students.
Each child in our class is so different, and the needs of the children vary as well.
Some students struggle to sit on the carpet as a typical child may sit. Others may have a hard time maintaining focus in a typical classroom chair.
The different seating options will help students who are unable to learn using the traditional school chair. They will help the students to better attend and focus to activities and tasks throughout the school day. These Transition and 3 in 1 chairs will help the students to be more successful in many tasks throughout the day such as completing tasks at the table, participating in carpet time, group time, and helping the students to learn to sit and attend in general.
