My Students
My students are wonderful bilingual learners. They have been in a Spanish immersion program since Kindergarten and now have made it all the way to fourth grade. The most incredible part of their learning is that they come from English-speaking homes, where their families want them to become bilingual. I provide them with fun learning activities and a language rich environment that can help them develop their skills even when the only place they actively use Spanish is at school.
The most incredible part of my students is how they can communicate in more than one language in a way that is seamless.
This means that by 4th grade they have developed both languages in a way that they can completely communicate with native Spanish-speakers. They also have an understanding of culture and being a world-citizen that has shaped many of them into natural leaders at such a young age. At the same time, they're so creative, fun, and eager to grow!
My Project
This project is focused on hands-on manipulatives used to foster student number sense and literacy. Since I teach in an immersion classroom, most of the activities need to be geared towards giving them a math base they can transfer from Spanish into English.
Hands-on activities, anchor charts, visual representations, and being creative are some of the ways in which the materials will be used to reach the Math standards.
The white-boards will be used in Small group instruction to promote their active participation. Fractions, decimals and place value tend to be a harder standards to master, meaning the materials will impact the teaching and independent practice of these concepts in a way that they can visualize regardless of the language they see it in.
