Differentiate & Have Fun During Guided Reading

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Russo's classroom raised $661

I am a third grade teacher in San Francisco. I have 18 students in my classroom and I teach all subjects. My school has a very high percentage of low-income families and a small student body that seems to be shrinking every year. We are a poor school, but you would never guess that by looking into my precious students' faces. They come to school everyday - ready, willing and able to learn.

My students love to read, and they love to read with me! Last year, my entire class moved up at least two grade levels, largely due to their participation in guided reading - the center of our literacy program. In guided reading, students are grouped homogeneously, or by similar reading abilities. Each group meets with me two or three times a week, depending on need, and together they read and respond to the same text. For my students, discussing their reading experiences is a wonderful opportunity to develop confidence, while at the same time improving their comprehension, vocabulary skills and fluency. I have a classroom filled with hams who love to “perform” in front of each other. Guided reading gives them the opportunity to do that in a safe, nurturing environment.

Students are completely engaged during guided reading when they are able to read high interest books, but in this day and age - Harry Potter is old news to seven-year olds. It is impossible to keep up with the newest or latest thing going. My goal here is not to reinvent the wheel. I want to develop a repertoire of high-interest "classic" literature that I can use with my entire class by differentiating the focus based on their reading level or ability. Lakeshore Learning has made that easy for me by creating literature units, CD read-alongs and a classic literature quiz game show for four favorite children’s stories; Holes, Charlotte’s Web, How To Eat Fried Worms and Because of Winn-Dixie. With the literature units and CD read-alongs, I will be able teach my students at their own levels during guided reading, targeting; reading fluently with speed and accuracy, pacing, intonation & expression and listening comprehension. The classic literature quiz game show will be a fun way to assess their comprehension as a whole group, while targeting; vocabulary development, recalling major points in text, analyzing story elements, drawing conclusions and making inferences.

Success in both school and life depends on the ability to read, so my overall goal is pretty basic - to improve their reading skills, period. Students need to be given the opportunity to learn to read with books that they love and that interest them. Your generous donation of this high-interest material will help ensure that my students have fun while they participate in guided reading, and at the same time setting a solid foundation for their future success as readers.
