My Students
I have a great group of third graders that enjoy learning something new every day. We are in a low socio-economic area which in low in vocabulary . But my students are always eager to learn and apply what they know. We have been blessed with several wonderful programs in our school but we are still in need of some supplies. I currently have 3 old dictionaries (in which pages are falling out) that my students use and bring to my attention the guide words don't always match which means some pages are gone. Because of economic level their use of vocabulary is low, the dictionary gives them an opportunity to increase that and be successful not only in 3rd grade but in future grades.
My Project
My students are in need of learning dictionary skills and building their vocabulary with the Thesaurus. Not only will they learn how to use a dictionary but a life long experience for learning new words. This is a book that will be used in all subjects as well as teach state objectives for the 3rd grade. The dictionary is used in all subjects. It is used for learning new vocabulary in science, social studies and even math. Because my student are not always exposed to higher levels of vocabulary the dictionary would give them the opportunity to learn new words which in turn increases vocabulary which increases reading skill. It is an essential for all kids. For my third graders it would open up a new world of possibilities.
