Dictionary and Thesaurus for Second Grade!

My students need 5 Merriam-Webster Children's dictionaries and 5 Children's Illustrated Thesaurus to use as reference so they could strengthen their writing and reading!

My Students

My students hail from an underserved community in San Francisco. For many of my students, English is not their first language and 100% of the students in our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite the many challenges they face, my students come into my classroom full of energy and ready to learn. Each student in my class desperately wants and needs illustrated dictionaries and thesauruses to keep in our classroom.

Like little word collectors, their young minds hunger for learning and using new vocabulary and diagrams that will prepare them for the future.

How frustrating it has been for them to search for words in the one non kid-friendly tattered, old pocket paperback dictionary we have and to never find or understand the meaning! The vocabulary spectrum is too limited. The verbiage is both outdated and inaccessible. My second graders need quality support and preparation.

My Project

I am requesting 5 childrens dictionaries and 5 thesauri, essential tools for growing readers and writers. The dictionaries would be used for students to search for definition of new words they come across not limited to only reader’s workshop but also in other academic areas, science and social studies, where tier-3 words, such as evaporation, colonialism, are used heavily. The thesauri would be used during writing for students to find different precise word choice, and expand their vocabulary.

The donations for this project will allow my students’ to reach the highest potential of their very best writing and highest comprehension of the text they’ll read in all subject areas.

My students already bring all they have bad what they can to they classroom. They are both ready and eager to learn, and they self-motivated and intelligent second graders! With the essential tools, such as these dictionaries and thesauri, I have no doubts my students will write and read beyond the heights set before them!
