Dictionaries to Increase Vocabulary in a Science Class
My students need a classroom set of dictionaries to help them learn new vocabulary.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. LaFranca's classroom raised $438

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Many of my students struggle with reading and writing. These students have been pushed through the system without having the proper skills necessary to decipher words and their meanings. This lack of skills translates into poor test scores.
I teach in a urban school in Brooklyn.
The student body consist of mostly low income minority students. Many of them have come from middle schools that promoted them with deficiencies in reading, writing and arithmetic. These student are eager to learn but have many obstacles the prevent them from being successful.
My Project
Because many of my students are at a 5th grade reading level, introducing dictionaries into the curriculum will help get the students to where they need to be.
I plan on using the dictionaries at the beginning of each new unit. Students will look up the commonly used words of the unit and keep them as part of their notes. When the students come to a word they don't recognize, students can look it up in their notes or the dictionary. This will allow the students to be more independent because they do not need the teacher to answer definition questions.
With the State exams just around the corner, the dictionaries can come in handy. I am hoping that this will spark their interest in learning.
Understanding vocabulary and reading are one of the most important skills a child could receive from school.
Not being able to communicate or understanding another person ideas limits a child's potential for being successful.
More than half of students from low‑income households
