My Students
I am not only a teacher, but an educator that trains kids to become joyful independent learners using the resources around them to help them succeed. Three fourths of my students are English Language Learners. It will take perseverance and hard work to master a language that isn't their native tongue
My fourth grade students are from all walks of life, but they all have two things in common: their high-need urban environment and most of them are English Language Learners.
These students struggle with reading, vocabulary, writing. Our staff works hard to find new and effective ways to teach to our large population of ELLs.
My Project
The most simple and straight forward resources we need in a high-need language development classroom are dictionaries and thesauruses. We have only ten newer dictionaries and five newer thesaurus in our class. The other resources are outdated, ripped, and even to hard to read. Our class has 30 students, sometimes up to 33. Right now they are sharing the dictionaries during activities. The instructional minutes are wasting away as we find ourselves relying on these important resources daily. Ideally these students' learning experience would strengthen and be more valuable if each child is able to freely use a dictionary at any time they want. This way learning and creating has no restriction.
Please help my students become independent learners with dictionaries and thesaurus.
They will have no limitations to learning, and will continue to value this experience their entire school career.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
