Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a seventh grade Social Studies and Communication Arts teacher at MS 201 in the South Bronx where 98% of the students are from low-income homes. The resource that I want my students to have is a class set (32) of a really good dictionary -- MERRIAM-WEBSTER'S COLLEGIATE DICTIONARY, 11TH EDITION. The dictionaries that my students used last school year fell short in meeting the student's needs. During the course of the reading workshop or the writing workshop, students quite frequently were unable to locate and define unfamiliar words because they were just not in the dictionary that they were using. They usually had to borrow my Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. With a class of 32 students, it got quite frustrating at times. Having a class set of dictionaries would be of great benefit to my students. It would allow them to have at their disposal a great reference tool that would enable them to continue to work on their vocabulary skills. A class set of dictionaries would just be fantastic, as each student would have their very own dictionary that they could sign out and take home to use to complete home work assignments.
