My students need a class set of dictionaries to grow and flourish as active readers.

Hooray! This project is fully funded

I am a 10th grade English teacher. I recently moved to a wonderful new school with many bright students and great staff; a school which is severely underfunded. My class and focus is on modern and classical literature. However, those books present a great challenge for my students. We are an inner city school whose population are high need students who are at high risk of dropping out due to lack of academic skills. The lack of resources is discouraging to the students and to the teachers as well. It also makes the educational process difficult.

Almost all of my students come from low income households and lack many fundamental academic skills needed to succeed both in school and in their future careers. Most of them cant afford the luxury of a dictionary or many other necessary tools which I have been trying to provide myself. The great tragedy which I witness very often is that many of the students love to read and explore new literature, however, their limited vocabulary often times frustrates them and causes them to give up. In addition, the few dictionaries we have are old and archaic, and the definitions they provide are difficult to understand. Therefore, it is urgent that we provide these students with the a solid foundation, a part of which is a new set of dictionaries that they can use in class.

With the help of modern and up to date dictionaries that provide clear and easy to understand definitions, students would be more likely to use them as a resource. As a result, these students would be more likely to keep reading and learning, therefore become life long learners. These dictionaries would encourage the students to seek out new words and expand their limited vocabulary as well as teach them to become independent learners who are responsible for their own learning process.

Your donation will have a great effect on the students and their futures. These are kids who lack fundamental skills, but who with your help can close the gap. A good dictionary is a great resource that many young people today choose to ignore. However, with proper tools they can become the future that we want them to be.
