Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach composition classes at a school primarily serving students who speak English as a second language. My students constantly reach for dictionaries and thesauri during in-class reading and writing assignments. The current set in my classroom is well-used, but is not in acceptable condition.

Most of my students come from families where neither parent graduated from high school.

My students are determined to be the first in their family to attend college. Our school is a well-respected college preparatory charter school serving students from primarily Latino, low-income households.

My Project

My students are struggling to build an academic vocabulary and to develop a varied writing style. Dictionaries and thesauri are in constant demand in my classroom, but the resources that I have are simply not serving the needs of my students. Also, many of my students' parents attend ESL classes in my room at night and these resources will be used in the night classes as well.

It is my sincere hope that students will build their vocabulary, become better readers and writers, and earn scores on college-prep tests that match their potential.

In order to reach these goals, they will need the appropriate resources.
