Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach an adorable kindergarten class in South Los Angeles. My children come from very rough homes where they are exposed to gangs, drugs, and prostitution. They have never seen snow, but they know that drugs mean "you got tight wheels." I have 13 children who did not speak any English on the first day of school and all of my children receive free breakfast and lunch. My students have worked so hard this year, with 18/20 scoring at an advanced level in both reading and math. One of the programs I am implementing this year is Writer's Workshop. There are two things I am in need of to make my program more successful. The first is picture dictionaries. A set of 10 would be plenty, as my children can share with a partner. Having a picture dictionary encourages them to write new words and gives them ideas for their writing. It also gives them an experience using a dictionary and an introduction to alphabetical order. The second item I am requesting is Post-It Chart Paper for class lists and brainstorming. These can then be posted about the room. We are not allowed to use tape or staples on our walls, and our bulletin board space is very limited. These two simple things would make a world of difference for my little authors. Thank you.
