Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About 50% of my 7th and 8th students are recent arrivals to the United States from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and Mexico. Their families move to the USA to obtain work and a better education for their children. The parents put enormous pressure on the kids to learn English so that one day the children will have better opportunities. With me, my students learn social studies and English at the same time. I use ESL (English as a Second Language) techniques to teach them such topics as civic participation, geography, and American history. Today, I ask you to fund Spanish-English dictionaries for my students. The dictionaries will be used on a daily basis by over 60 students per year. The dictionaries will help the students' reading, writing and speaking in English. For instance, right now my 7th grade bilingual class is struggling to read childrens' books in English about American history. If the students had a dictionary at their desk when reading, they would comprehend the text more easily. Also, these dictionaries would be invaluable tools for when my students write letters to their Congressperson about social issues in May. Please help my students make their American dreams come true.
