Dialogic Reading with Picture Books

Help me give my students picture books to promote language development. Reading books and participating in book discussions will increase my students' speech and language skills.

My Project

I work with students who receive speech therapy as part of their special education program. Reading aloud to students and facilitating book discussions, "dialogic reading," has been shown to be an effective way to increase student's language skills.

Having a variety of pictures books in the speech room, will help me meet a variety of student learning goals.

Some students may be working on answering questions. Others may be learning to tell narratives, including the important parts of a story, such as the character, setting, initiating event, character's feelings and plan.

Many of the selected picture books have characters who are faced with a problem they must overcome. Talking about conflicts and the feelings that come from them can be a way for students to better understand their own emotions and those of others.

In addition to the picture book, my project includes card stock, laminating pouches, and velcro. With these materials, we can make puppets of some of the characters in the books. With puppets, the students can act out the story and have the characters talk. For some students, holding a puppet makes the story come alive, which promotes a greater understanding of the story.

I am excited to read a wide variety of picture books to my students in order to increase their expressive and receptive language skills!
