Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Specifically, students will be able to calm down and emotionally regulate in a room with ambient, soft lighting from the corner floor lamps and twinkle-string lighting, instead of harsh fluorescent lights the office provides. They will be able to have select seating with the bean bags chairs, while viewing a beautiful, calming tapestry, rather than the window-less hard cinder-blocks from the 1957-built school. Students will be able to focus on their tasks at hand because they will be comfortable and feel safe. They will have inspiring messages and views.
This confidential, quiet, calm, softly lit area will allow students to learn self-regulation and coping skills for their world.
Students will be able to self-select flexible seating while in this space. The opportunity to make choices in one's life leads to greater self-advocacy and self-esteem. I hope it can start with this beautiful room! It is also my hope to empower and encourage our school's youth to make more positive choices, self select to take a break, and have this space be theirs.
