Our school has many aspiring drummers who are seeking a way to build community, inspire one another, and elevate their level of play and opportunities to perform. From 7th-12 grade, our students can use drumming to build camaraderie, mentorship, and art. Their shared passion for drumming and music has often created unlikely pairings, like in last year's talent show performance when a hesitant 7th grader and boisterous 10th grader shared weeks of mentorship, practice, and the stage.
Many of our students come from backgrounds that do not provide many opportunities to explore and engage in music and shared performance.
At a crossroads between desire and experience, they need more to bring depth and meaning to their education. They need the structure of a regular club and the guidance of a committed teacher. They need basic supplies to get this club off the ground.
My Project
Many students at our school scratch out a musical existence on their own. Some are qualified drummers who perform in niche bands or annual talent shows. Many more are aspiring musicians who need access to free, basic musical education.
These drumsticks and practice pads will help our school start a passionate but unfunded drum club.
Devoted students will meet before and after school and at lunch to share their enthusiasm for drumming. These pads and sticks will facilitate rudimentary instruction of drumming. They will enable us to form a club that will grow each month and each year. They will enable students who cannot afford these musical basics to join the experience.
Music clubs nurture the culture and environment of a school. Like sports teams, they often provide the motivation for students to engage positively with other students and teachers, and to raise their academic performance as they feel the power of education and inclusion.
