Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the privilege this year of educating the minds of 25 Kindergartners. Twenty-five Kindergartners who are eager to learn, excited about reading, mastering language arts, pumped about math, and so enthusiastic about the arts. However, they have come into Kindergarten in the midst of horrible budget cuts, that provide a small milestone in achieving these goals.

These passionate group of kindergarten graders, reside on the Southside of Chicago.

They have the privilege of learning in an environment that believes in personalized learning, flexible seating, and the power of technology. The students are of both African American and Hispanic descent. 99% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. However, they are learning that believing in themselves is all that matters.

My Project

In Kindergarten, we have been working hard to implement developmentally appropriate practices for our Kindergarten friends. Throughout the years, we have put into place tons of standard test and through the process we have lost sight of what's best for our 5 and 6 year old friend. This year, I wholehearted want to return to thinking about what is developmentally appropriate and fun for my kindergarten friends. The resources listed above will ensure that I can continue these efforts.

The card stock, rings, and laminating sheets will be used to create interactive, concrete, differentiated learning stations.

Students will be able to self-select from the stations provided, giving them a sense of autonomy. Also, with our newly implemented writing station the students will greatly benefit from markers and stamps to create engaging projects that will boost engagement and writing skills. Please join me in my goal of creating a Kindergarten classroom in which students are learning in an environment and with the resources that are appropriate for them.
