Developing Young Responsible Readers

My Project

The mission of the reading support program is to provide academic support to decrease the literacy gap in grades 1-3. Our reading support team is made up of 5 teachers. The 70 students that we help on a daily basis are struggling readers in grades 1, 2 and 3.

Our goal is to help our students to be on-level in reading and to teach the Core Value of Responsibility.

When we conduct guided reading sessions with our students, we provide opportunities to read leveled books daily and go through the close reading process.

The items that are purchased will teach our school's Core Value of Responsibility. After each reading session, students are allowed to take home books or high frequency words. Part of the students' responsibility is to read out loud to their parents and get a parent signature. Our Gr. 1 students have the responsibility of reading their high frequency word cards out loud to their parents.

In addition, they must be responsible in taking care of their word cards and books, and must bring them back to school. After fulfilling these responsibilities, to teach the Core Value of Being Responsible, our reading support team plans to give students incentives like party favors, gift pencils, stationary sets, zipper pouches, rewards and gift prizes to relay the message of "Good job in taking care of your books/cards and for reading to your parents."
