Developing Successful Learners through Sensory and Behavioral Supports
Help me give my students sensory tools that they need to promote successful learning. I am requesting tools such as sensory seat cushions, fidgets, and timers to help my students with their goals of staying on-task and self-regulating.
As a first year Special Education Teacher in a high-needs urban public school, I have had an incredible first three months teaching and learning with my fifth and sixth grade students. After four years of learning from my various field experiences and mentors, I was eager to finally pursue my passion in a classroom of my own and take on the challenge of beginning my teaching career.
Through my role as a Learning Support Teacher, I have the incredible experience of teaching some of the kindest and most motivated students with various academic and behavioral needs.
My fifth and sixth graders are eager to learn even when the work is challenging. I constantly emphasize the importance of effort to them and we celebrate each new skill mastered or progress towards their goals as growth! Whether it is accurately reading a few more sight words than last time or staying on-task for a longer period of time, we celebrate them as wins to foster students' self-concepts.
My Project
My students have a variety of academic and behavioral needs. Through this project, I wish to provide them with sensory supports proven to promote on-task behavior and self-regulation. These tools help students with ADHD and other behavioral needs control their emotions and stay focused during instruction.
Utilizing sensory tools such as cushions, fidgets on top of pencils, and other supports helps students stay on-task so they can focus on themselves and their work.
Many of my students have goals to stay on-task during instruction. Utilizing timers on their desks will give them visuals of how much time they have left to work on assignments before getting breaks.
For my students with ADHD, using sensory seat cushions will help them stay focused on themselves and their work while receiving the sensory feedback they need. This will be a helpful tool for my students who have challenges sitting still for long periods of time.
In addition, the resource of printer paper will be much appreciated as I write and finalize their IEPs, FBAs, and Positive Behavior Support Plans!
Just like I tell my students, any small step will serve as progress towards my goal of providing these resources to my students. Thank you in advance for your contribution and wishing you and your family a happy holidays!
