Developing Social Play Skills for Students with Autism!
My students need Hot Wheels, construction vehicles, school bus, and first responder vehicles, tool bench, kitchen set, barn, zoo animals, doll, puppy, and other toys and games that support their IEP social skills goals.
My wonderfully unique and amazing kindergarten-1st grade students all have an educational diagnosis of autism. Autism Spectrum Disorder impacts social, emotional, behavioral skills, and communication. Many of my students are nonverbal and use augmentative communication devices and other assistive technologies to communicate and engage with their world.
My students with autism are seeking age-appropriate toys and games that support their IEP social skills goals.
Many of our target goals include demonstrating 1- and 2-step play schemes, initiating play with peers, responding to invitations to play, taking turns, sharing preferred items, following 1- and 2-step directions, engaging in parallel play, sustaining independent play/work, and tolerating peers engaging with the same play materials.
As a child with moderate-severe autism, each of students require explicit teaching of social play skills. Individual lessons can include discrete trials, modeling, and imitation with various levels of prompting and embedded ABA methodologies. My students learn best through visual and hand-on learning. This project will supports those needs!
My Project
This project is filled with high-interest materials that will motivate my students to meet their goals while also providing me with the necessary tools to help them get there!
Engaging with a variety of toys and games will increase my students' mastery and generalization of target social skills.
My students are learning to roll and stop a car when given the words "go" and "stop". By being able to use the hot wheels, construction vehicles, school bus, and first responder vehicles, they will learn to master the skills across play schemes while also learning new vocabulary and community professionals. The hot wheels speed race will support students in the first stages of learning cooperative play. Language while be incorporated when making the hot wheels "ready, set, go," "look fast," and try to "go slow." Other students are learning to follow 2-step play schemes, so the tool bench, kitchen set, barn, zoo animals, doll, and puppy were selected to facilitate cooperative imaginative play as well as language development and adaptive behavior.
All of my students are learning to follow rule based games. The Pete the Cat Buttons, Barbecue Party, and Crazy Toaster games will increase their opportunity to wait their turn with hands to self, pick a card/spin a spinner, identifying when it's a peers turn, pass game pieces to the identified peer, and follow the 1- or 2-step direction for game play. The Penguin Balloon and 3 Little Pigs game will be wonderful for receptive and expressive language growth.
All materials were selected with student need in mind. Each item will increase social engagement, behavior skills, independent functioning, and generalization as well as provide positive reinforcement.
