My students need fidget toys, weighted shoulder wraps, and touchable texture tools to support students with focus, attention, calming, and active listening through tactile input.
My students are compassionate, kind, and empathetic to others facing challenges both academically and socially. They show an amazing ability to persevere daily through academic areas. Together, they come together in a small group to develop their mathematical concepts, abstract concepts being the most difficult to grasp.
Our school is a Title I school which serves approximately 160 students in K-8.
The school is hidden among farm fields and surrounded by mountains in a rural community. The students, community, and staff are a family coming together for educational success.
My Project
Self-regulation tools will support my students with maintaining focus, attention, staying calm, and showing active listening skills within the academic setting. By providing tactile input, students are better able to maintain behaviors that are conducive to learning.
By directing student movement and forcing both hemispheres in the brain to communicate, student learning is enhanced through the use of fidgets.
These tools benefit students who are constantly displaying disruptive behaviors such as constantly sharpening pencils, tapping their foot, or rummaging through their desks. The use of fidgets will help my students focus in all classroom settings leading to increased academic successes.
These tools will support students with ADD, ADHD, and even those with high-stress levels. They will be utilized by students in grades ranging from Kindergarten through 8th grade. These are beneficial in the general education classroom and during pull-out instruction. Through the fidgeting, or directed movement, students are really increasing their alertness!
