Developing Reading Identity

My students need the books necessary to build a reading identity first and foremost. In doing so, this will give them what they need to grow into whom they really want to be.

My Students

I believe that a classroom library is the heart and soul of a teacher's ability to continue reading development, to nurture, to encourage and to grow a life long love of reading.

"A classroom library is the window into a teacher's own personality, and it reflects the importance of life long literacy."

(Heather Wopert-Gawron, Edutopia.com) in the Special Education Language Arts Junior High School classroom.

My 7th and 8th grade Special Education Language Arts students are taught to engage in the act of reading. They read for the entire school year! Daily reading, as a classroom group is a foundational piece of our daily learning routine. There is nothing more rewarding to me as a teacher, than when as student asks "are we going to keep reading today Mrs. Skaggs?" or they comment that they like the book, and volunteer to read out loud to the class!

My current classroom library consists of bits and pieces of book sets, as they have been handed down from teacher to teacher. I do not have complete class sets of nice books to accommodate the number of students in my classroom.

My Project

Special Education Language Arts students are searching for their identify, through peer groups, school groups and reading in the Special Education Language Arts classroom.

It's difficult being a Junior High School student, but it is even more difficult when you have a special education identification attached to you.

Through identity reading, such as Ghost, Maniac McGee and The Paperboy, my students will learn that they have the right to make friends, to feel like they matter, that they are not so different and that anything is possible. I want to bridge the gap between what my students believe about themselves and teach them to imagine what they can be.
