My Project

This project serves as a catalyst for developing essential logical and critical thinking skills in math and computer science students on Molokai. This is accomplished using a structured, hands-on puzzle-based curriculum. Our students are special because they are from Molokai and have a strong ‘can-do’ spirit. However, their potential is often hindered by the abstract nature of advanced math and computer science concepts. This project aims to bridge the gap between theoretical confusion and practical mastery, empowering students with a more confident approach to tackling complex challenges.

'We are not just teaching students to solve puzzles; we are teaching them to solve problems they haven't even encountered yet.'

Recognizing that math and computer science students often struggle with abstract concepts, this project uses a multi-tiered approach, beginning with simple metal puzzles that introduce fundamental problem-solving strategies through tangible, one-step abstractions.

Progressing to medium-difficulty wooden and rope puzzles, students will engage in multi-step problem-solving, requiring them to mentally sequence and execute more complex actions — a crucial skill for mastering algorithmic thinking and mathematical proofs. Finally, high-difficulty escape room puzzles will challenge advanced students while encouraging collaborative problem-solving.

By grounding abstract concepts in concrete, engaging experiences, this project bridges the gap between abstraction and practical application, giving students the confidence to become adaptable, analytical, and creative problem-solvers. This project differentiates instruction, allowing for all students to be challenged at their level.
