Developing Literacy In The Content Areas: Science

My students need 23 high interest books, at the appropriate reading level, on science topics to increase their literacy in that area. The titles include "13 Things That Don't Make Sense" and "Mind-Boggling Science."

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Brousseau's classroom raised $279

My Students

Educators have determined that students need different reading and thinking skills to properly benefit from reading in the content areas. I wish to supplement our classroom library with books that will help my students analyze and process information from science oriented materials.

Our students are enrolled in a basic English class that serves students who are at or below grade level in reading and writing.

They, in most cases, have struggled with reading in their elementary and middle school years. As high school sophomores, they are placed in a class that is "double-blocked." This allows us to work with them for two periods each day on improving their reading and writing skills.

My Project

The reading materials requested represent many areas of science, including biology, ecology, physics, forensics, research and more. They also are divided between three different reading levels, so as to meet the needs of all of our students. The specific titles were selected in hopes of capturing the interest of our students, while providing background information for a variety of specialized areas in science. We have an independent reading program in place and students choose their books to read in class and at home. They journal twice weekly about their reading and practice skills such as making inferences, predictions, evaluations and clarifying, which are all skills needed to process written material. Feedback on their entries is provided to encourage and guide each student's progress.

The addition of these books to our classroom will allow students to become aware of more science related fields and provide information to assist them as they read and process science based materials in the future.

Literacy in the academic content area of science is necessary for students to move forward as independent readers in our rapidly expanding, science based society.
