Developing Lifelong Strategies for Developing Readers

My Project

I am currently teaching a group of non-readers in a self-contained and Resource setting skills and strategies to becoming a better reader. These 2nd and 3rd grade students are reading severely below their expected grade level. The decodable books will be used to teach these non-readers how letters make words by learning strategies and skills using short and long vowels, diagraphs, and high frequency words.

The students will practice reading the books with a teacher/para professional at school.

Then they will have the opportunity to take the books home to read to a parent. The goal is to get these students to pick books that are easy to read while enhancing foundational skills and strategies that they have not yet developed. Students will be expected to read at least 3-5 books per week and record their progress on their daily reading log. Students will be allowed to track the number of books in which they have read throughout the year.

The students will receive quarterly progress monitoring on high frequency words and fluency checks. Students will be rewarded for their success each grading period. At the end of the school year, students will be allow to select a book from the approved Florida booklist to place in their home library.
