Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills with Sorting Activities

Help me give my students materials to create sorting activities. We will need cardstock, color paper, printer ink, and envelopes to create and organize the sorts.

My Project

Third, fourth, and fifth graders are full of energy and ready and willing to learn. The problem is getting them to think outside the box in order to understand concepts they are learning in science and history. When taking assessments the students tend to understand the basic concept but when given scenarios and critical thinking questions they would flop. Therefore, I decided they would need some activities that would address different learning styles yet still allow me to quickly assess their understanding. This is where the sorts came in. Using open and closed sorts would be great for the students during the learning of each unit, however they can also continued to be used after the units in choice centers. The goal is that using a more interactive style of learning will keep the students engaged and thinking critically in order to develop a deeper understanding of the concepts.
