Developing Great Writers Through Six Trait Writing
My students need The Trait Crate Plus to provide a variety of mentor texts that exemplify the six traits of great writing and expert writing lessons to help them become the best writers they can be!
I teach on a US Army base and all of my students are military dependents or children of civilian contractors for the military. They are a diverse group of learners who come to me with a wide range of life experiences and educational backgrounds. Many were born overseas and have already moved across oceans and contents to be in my classroom. As a military spouse myself and parent of two military children, I consider it a privilege to serve the families of those who serve our country!
As military children, my students face enormous challenges and personal sacrifices daily.
Every two to three years they give up their home, friends, teachers, teams, neighbors and more, and start over in a new place. Their parents are often gone for weeks or months at a time on field exercises, training academies, and overseas deployments. Still, these children carry on taking these challenges in stride, surviving and thriving through it all. Their resilience is a testament to the remarkable strength of their courage and spirit.
My Project
As third graders, my students must make an extraordinary leap from writing simple sentences and short paragraphs to composing five-paragraph essays and narrative pieces. To say that it is a challenge to teach them to be confident writers, capable of organizing and expressing their ideas clearly and articulately, is an understatement. To be successful, they need more than just lessons on spelling or main idea, they need examples of great writing and opportunities to try out the strategies great writers use to make their own writing shine.
My students need The Trait Crate Plus to provide a variety of mentor texts that exemplify the six traits of great writing and expert writing lessons to help them become the best writers they can be.
The Trait Crate Plus has specially chosen mentor texts and lessons that address each of the six traits of great writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions. Also included in the kit is Culham’s bestseller The Writing Thief, which takes a deep dive into the theory and practice of using mentor texts to teach the craft of writing. I believe that by using these resources in tandem, I will better able to guide my student through the process of learning to write than ever before.
With this kit, students will be exposed to great writing, practice using strategies to enhance their writing, and develop writing pieces that meet or exceed the third grade common core writing standards.
