Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are in a fourth grade, general education classroom. I have twenty-six students enrolled in my class. My students are very talented young individuals who come from a high poverty section of New York City. They face challenges outside of school, but they always do their best to succeed everyday. My school is one hundred percent free breakfast and lunch.
My students are very ambitious and I'm constantly amazed by their ability to strive to do better.
They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
In order to understand what they read, children must be able to read fluently. My students practice becoming fluent readers everyday. Incorporating the use of the the timers would be an excellent way for students to start self monitoring their reading. The timers will allow my students to see how many words per minute they are able to read. This will also give them incentive to read more because they will want to try to beat their previous time.
The dividers will allow my students to really zone in on their reading.
They will be able to focus on the story they are reading and not be distracted.
My students also would benefit from having their own reading comprehension journals. The journals will encourage my students to think critically about what they are reading. Having a small easel would allow me to work with groups anywhere in the classroom!
