My students need whole skeleton for class, CPR trainers for getting CPR/AED certified, gloves and basic exam/safety equipment, and a few things for our Sports Medicine Team to assist our school community athletes.
My 55 Sports Medicine students and another 10 former students in the Sports Medicine Club are eager to learn about the fields of biomedical science, get hands-on experience in class, and take their new knowledge and skills into our school community and even into college. So many students have been inspired into health professions by this class, and they come back even years later as guest speakers to continue inspiring the next set of students.
Our students should be able to feel proud of their role on our new sports medicine staff and be more visible in our school community as role models for others to get into the health professions.
They work with me in class and during lunches (with minimal supplies) and have a chance to observe and assist our fabulous athletic trainer (who is generously donated to us from a local pediatric hospital) after school. However, we really only have a training closet with one old table and desk and a few banged up or broken coolers and ice chests, and this is far less than the professional environment that I am hoping to show my students. This year we are working for more!
My Project
Having a full skeleton and some basic exam equipment such as gloves and penlights in the classroom will give us the ability to study human performance more effectively, as we model, examine, and experiment with basic anatomy and physiology in each body region we study. Safety and preparedness are major themes in medicine, so getting our students CPR/AED and First Aid certified is a priority. They need CPR defibrillator training units, CPR Mask Shield, and CPR Rescue Mask Training Practi-Valves.
Our goal this year is to also use our skills to help out our athletic teams with more medical support as we work with our fabulous volunteer athletic trainer!
These supplies give us an opportunity to do that right away.
