Help me give my students a sketchbook to develop their artistic identity, clay and plaster for 3-dimensional sculpture, and basic supplies that every art classroom should have on hand!
The beauty of student creation becomes even more evident when you understand the story, challenges, and emotions behind each masterpiece. Located in a low socioeconomic community of New York City, many of my students face challenges at home, are forced to grow up too quickly, and do not have the opportunity to explore the world around them.
Art is an outlet for expression and a place where students can discover their own identity.
Once students understand that they can take their emotions, good and bad, and channel them into creativity, the opportunities are endless. There is no greater reward than building a relationship with a child that furthers them not only in the art room; but in life.
My Project
Each year I have students personalize their own sketchbooks. Inside we complete process journaling, daily prompts, and project planning. I love these sketchbooks because it is simple to unbind and add more pages. Students are constantly taking pages home to sketch on and then adding to their book.
When I look through the sketchbooks it becomes obvious who each book belongs to because they develop an artistic identity.
While some students value shade or draw anime characters, others will jot speech bubbles and used any mixed media I make available. In a society where students are taught to give the same answers on a test, the arts celebrate our differences and how we are unique.
Other materials, like clay and plaster, are exciting and new to my students. With large class sizes, I need to make sure I have enough of these materials to give the experience to the full class. In a generation filled with technology, there is no better feeling than creating something beautiful with a slab of clay and putting all other distractions aside. For my last project, I received donations for a pottery wheel! It is such a hit and I can't wait to utilize it more in my classroom this year!
