Developing a Sense of Self and Space in the Community
My students need the AKASO cameras to capture their experiences while out in the community in order to make documentation boards. They need boots to keep their feet dry on rainy days during 1.5 hr walks.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are bright, energetic, wonderful future leaders of the world! Their enthusiasm and curiosity is infectious. Each day offers a new way to explore and develop a better understanding of the world around them. No matter the weather, these learners want to be out and about focusing on hands on learning opportunities.
The 3 - 5-year-old students in my class are a true representation of the community.
They come from all racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic groups, including immigrants, refugees, and bilingual students.
My Project
Each week our class will walk through our neighborhood to visit public resources, parks, and businesses. The boots will allow our class venture out even on wet days when puddles, rain, or snow might have kept us in.
The materials will allow our young learners to capture their experiences from their own perspective while also giving the adults in their lives a glimpse of the world from a child's eye.
Students will document these trips using the AKASO cameras. We will use photos and video to create maps, books, videos, and documentation boards that showcase places we've visited and what we've learned about our community. Our essential question will focus on our sense of space and self within our community.
