Developing a Nurturing, Flexible Kindergarten Environment

My Students

I teach at a title 1 school in a Kindergarten classroom. Many of my students come from military background families and the environment is constantly changing. My students seem to be eager about learning, learning to read, work with numbers and write. I have a mixed ability group of students where some can already write their name and then some do not know how to hold a pencil.

My students will eventually become independent learners by the end of the year and my goal is to allow them to have flexible seating and to create a respectful, nurturing, love of learning environment for them to love.

My classroom only has the basic needs for a class of students. I have tables, chairs, bookcases, and storage. I am seeking an opportunity to create a learning space where my students will be able to choose where they want to learn and to have ample tools to help them succeed in Kindergarten .

My Project

My students will be learning in small groups and rotating through learning station most of the day. My students need flexible seating to create a comfortable, inviting space for them to love their learning. This will help provide them with the foundation of learning and the need and desire for learning.

Not all students want to learn, but as teachers we can help to create an environment where students will want to come and participate.

My students will also benefit from receiving a listening station. Currently the classroom does not have one. This is essential in a Kindergarten classroom so that students will learn key listening skills when it comes to reading, and following directions.
