Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are first or second generation immigrants who live in our school's neighborhood. The majority of my students are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch and may become the first in their family to attend college. My students have great opportunities in my class and at our school, but they deserve more.
Our SF Bay Area school has a dedicated and active focus on biliteracy as our developmental dual-language program is the largest in our school district.
This year in my class, we are also focusing on integrating technology and building a great love of reading into all content areas of our literacy practices.
Because our school is a Title One school, funding is a continued challenge in our community. Our students depend on teachers' out of pocket purchases and donations to access materials beyond the requirements. The generous support of the DonorsChoose.org community makes many learning opportunities for my students possible. Please help support my amazing group of fifth graders!
My Project
Students at our school often come into my classroom without a love for reading. Our fourth grade cohort uses the Lucy Calkins program - an amazing hands on reading program - for independent reading and eventually book clubs for students. The program is differentiated and truly allows students to develop a love for reading. The most vital component of the program is to have a plethora of culturally relevant and engaging chapter books in both English and Spanish.
I believe all my students are eager to learn and will get lost in a book when the text interests them.
Currently, our classroom library is dominated by English texts. This doesn't support my amazing bilingual students to equally develop their literacy skills in Spanish. This project will allow more students to develop a love of reading and by doing so better prepare them for their educational career.
