Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know what it's like to get lost in a good book? To be magically transported to another world? Reading is magical in that sense. My students are in need of some new and exciting books for our classroom library to read independently.
Our students are a fantastic group of hard working, resilient, creative kids who are excited about learning.
Our school is a rigorous, loving, inclusive environment that pushes our students daily to challenge themselves and excel not only in academics but in leadership as well. We serve a mainly low-income, diverse population. The core principles of our school are writing, service learning, STEM, and resiliency.
My Project
In my Humanities classroom the students are asked to choose independent reading books throughout the year. They create book reviews, presentations, and other reports on the books they are able to complete. Through independent reading the students grow in their fluency, and language development as well as a love for reading that will follow them their whole lives. The first fifteen minutes of class is dedicated to independent reading and my students are devouring books which I love to see but now we are in need of some new material.
Giving my students access to great authors and titles will only expand their love for reading and help them as they gain fluency and vocabulary development.
Giving our students free choice over the books they read fosters independence. My students will gain skills that will last them a lifetime.
More than half of students from low‑income households
