My Project
These items will be used in a high school English Language Arts class that serves predominantly Black and African American students in the neighborhoods in and around northwest Detroit. Our students will engage in place-based and project-based learning that requires a classroom space that is welcoming, engaging, and equipped with tools to enhance their leadership and public speaking skills.
In our project-based classroom, students will gain skills and knowledge to prepare them for the real world outside of our classroom - including their ability to present with confidence, speak with clarity, and share their ideas for making the world a better place, including right here in our community!
As part of our curriculum, students will choose a social justice topic that impacts the neighborhoods in and around our school, the community where many of our students live. Once their topic is selected at the beginning of the school year, students will participate in a rigorous research process to gather existing data and also interview community members.
At the end of the school year, students will present their projects and solution-driven recommendations to a panel of professionals from the public and private sectors as well as community residents.
Throughout the year, students will use our new podium and sound system to practice their public speaking and presentation skills. The additional items on this donation request list will be instrumental in creating a welcoming and inviting space for students and our guests, and/or assisting me in organizing the student projects (i.e. file cabinets).
