Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 5th grade students face many challenges. Many of them come from single parent homes. Many of them know someone who is in a gang or have experienced crime and/or violence related to gang activity. For some of them, the meals at school are their only meals throughout the week
The students I teach do not have the same advantages as their same aged peers living twenty minutes from them because of the zip code they happened to be born in.
The school they attend is 90% free and reduced lunch which means 90% at or below the poverty line.I would like to start giving my students more
opportunities.

My Project
I am requesting 8 classical guitars. I believe teaching my fifth graders to read and play music with classical guitars is a great way to teach hard work and perseverance, and to show how hard work and perseverance pays off. I've chosen guitars because it is the instrument I've learned to play.
I would like to start with 8-10 students and then expand to as many as my fifth grade classroom will hold. I am a general education teacher teaching all subjects, so I will be teaching lessons 5 times a week during recess and lunch. (My 5th graders will be able to eat first of course.) Students won't mind at all giving up a little bit of their time once they're lead to success with their music, and I certainly don't mind giving up a little bit of mine.
This project will give disadvantaged students the gift of music.
For the dedicated student, it could lead to scholarships and multiple other opportunities to make their lives better. The great satisfaction from hard work will translate into all other academic and non-academic areas of their lives.
Please help give these students more opportunities to level the playing field.
