My students need mysteries to solve! We are requesting novels like A to Z Mysteries, The Kidnapped King, Nate the Great and the Stolen Base, along with other novels. We love to develop our reading habits and MYSTERIES are the best for noticing details, predicting and going back to revise our thinking.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Clift's classroom raised $598

My Students
We are a Community School serving 400 students in a large inner city school district that serves almost 10,000 students
Our diverse students come to reading with a variety of attitudes and motivations about reading, but over the course of our time together, develop a true love of reading, at all levels.
80% of our students are reading below grade level, some significantly. Some are English Language Learners, some have moved from other districts, some have faced trauma. All are amazingly capable! Getting the right books in their hands makes a difference.
My Project
My students need mysteries to solve! We are requesting novels like AZ Mysteries, The Kidnapped King, Nate thtGreat and the Stolen Base, along with other novels. We love to develop our reading habits and MYSTERIES are the best for noticing details, predicting and going back to revise our thinking. We use series books to encourage our low level but older students (3rd - 5th) to develop independence in reading. We read the first book in the series together and learn about how the genre, characters, setting and plot work. After we lay this foundation, students are able to independently access the rest of the series for a fun enjoyable read!
If only you could see the lively debates that come as the students compare the texts as they move through the series!
These mysteries support high level observational skills and encourage the kids to go back in the text to adjust their thinking as they learn new clues. They challenge each other to"prove it" and find the evidence in the text. They question how they missed a clue and... as the series goes on they learn to pay more attention to the details. All skills they need to be successful beyond elementary school.
