My students need a systematic system for reading intervention including diagnostic assessments and lessons plus more than 100 sets of high interest books for reading groups + take home copies to practice reading with their families.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The life of a struggling reader in elementary school is a difficult one. They get teased, fall further and further behind every year when they can't access the new materials, and they feel the failure from as early as 5 and 6 years old.
Everyone of my students is up against incredible odds whether or not they are classified as "struggling".
My students are predominately African American and Latino and over 90% of my students qualify for the state free lunch program. Those that do not live in the projects surrounding our school often live in homeless shelters. Combine this difficulties in reading and you have a student poor prognosis for making it through high school.
My Project
With the individualized support my students will receive in intervention groups, these kindergarten-3rd graders will develop not only the decoding and comprehension skills they need to become successful readers, they will develop the confidence they need rewrite their identities as successful learners.
The Leveled Literacy Intervention kit has color-filled fiction and non-fiction books that captivate the interest of early readers while providing books in a strategic sequence of increasing difficulty.
Each lesson/book is accompanied by word sorting and magnetic letter activities for the group lesson and practice at home.
The daily diagnostic component of the intervention system is what makes this resource so highly effective for a reading intervention teacher. By closely monitoring what strategies each student is mastering (or not) I can effectively tailor the instruction every lesson. The digital data keeping tools included allow me to share this information with their classroom teacher and their parents furthering the impact of the intervention.
By donating to this project, you are helping end the cycle of failure so many struggling readers encounter. I have seen reading intervention work wonders time and time again and I am so excited to bring this opportunity to my striving readers!
