This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am the lucky teacher of 120 very enthusiastic middle school students in a low income community. My students have an array of abilities and interests. I had the honor of teaching many of these students in prior years. This gives me an advantage that I am looking forward to cultivating.
My school strives to provide an academic program in a caring and supportive learning environment emphasizing Literacy, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics tailored to meet the needs of our students.
My Project
My students are desperately needing dictionaries to develop their dictionary skills which will ultimately help them increase their vocabulary. Each week, students are given 20 vocabulary words. Students' first instinct is to use a Chromebook. Unfortunately, there are times when the Wi-Fi is down or Chromebooks are not available. Dictionary skills are also assessed during state testing.
Dictionaries teach correct spelling, parts of speech, pronunciation, spelling patterns, and most importantly, expose students to a multitude of other words.
When students learn to use a dictionary, they can use this same skill when using other reference material. Dictionaries are desperately needed to help my students reach their potential.
